Manage User Assignments

 

This information applies only to licenses of the type Named User.

For the License Type Named User (Device Activation)

Procedure

Assign Licenses to Users

  1. Open the Vector License Portal.

  2. Select the Named User license.

  3. Click on Edit (pencil icon).

  4. Then enter the User Assignment (Windows Login).

For the License Type Named User (Network Activation)

General

The Manage User Assignments dialog is used to enable users to use one or more Named User (Network Activation) licenses. It shows all activated licenses of this license type in a single column per license. The combination of user names and assignments is stored in a user list.

Prerequisites

To use the licenses, the following conditions must be met:

  • The license must be activated (GUI/CLI) and valid on a computer (or a virtual machine) that will act as a customer license server. This computer must be accessible to the end users in your company.

  • The computer must be configured as a customer license server (GUI/CLI).

  • A user list must be configured and transferred to the server. See Assigning Licenses to Users procedure below.

Procedures

For the procedures, open the Vector License Client and click Network Licenses|Manage User Assignments. The Manage User Assignments dialog opens.

Procedure

Assign Licenses to Users

  1. Enter the user name in the left column.
    There is an auto-complete when entering. This data comes from the Active Directory. Access to Active Directory can be disabled in the VLC settings (Settings|License Server|Active Directory).
  2. In the user's row, activate the column of the corresponding license.
  3. Click [Apply] at the very bottom right to save the changes.
    This also allows you to interrupt editing at any time.
  4. Transfer the user list to the customer license server.
  1. Click [Transfer to Server] to transfer all assignments at once.
  2. Click the arrow in the [Transfer to Server] split button to transfer a specific license.
  1. Click [OK].

Procedure

Manage Existing User Assignments

  1. Navigate to the user name in the leftmost column.
  2. In the user's row, activate or deactivate the column of the corresponding license.
  3. Click [Apply] at the very bottom right to save the changes.
    This also allows you to interrupt editing at any time.
  4. Transfer the user list to the customer license server.
  1. Click [Transfer to Server] to transfer all assignments at once.
  2. Click the arrow in the [Transfer to Server] split button to transfer a specific license.
  1. Click [OK].

Procedure

Delete User Assignments

  1. Navigate to the user name in the leftmost column.
  2. Click x in the user's row in the rightmost column.
  3. Click [Apply] at the very bottom right to save the changes.
    This also allows you to interrupt editing at any time.
  4. Transfer the user list to the customer license server.
  1. Click [Transfer to Server] to transfer all assignments at once.
  2. Click the arrow in the [Transfer to Server] split button to transfer a specific license.
  1. Click [OK].

Procedure

Import Usernames

Usernames can be imported from *.csv files or from Active Directory groups.

Process with CSV files

Prerequisite: You need an existing CSV file. The file can either be self-created or from a previous export.

  1. Click the import split button .
  2. Select Import Usernames From CSV File....
  3. Select the CSV file and click [open].
    The dialog Username Assignments opens.
  4. Select which licenses shall already be assigned.
    Assignments can also be made later in the Manage User Assignments dialog.
  5. Click [OK] to close the dialog Username Assignments.
  6. In the Manage User Assignments dialog that is still open, click [Apply] at the very bottom right to save the changes.
    This also allows you to interrupt editing at any time.
  7. Transfer the user list to the customer license server.
  1. Click [Transfer to Server] to transfer all assignments at once.
  2. Click the arrow in the [Transfer to Server] split button to transfer a specific license.
  1. Click [OK] to close the dialog Manage User Assignments.

Process with Active Directory Groups

Prerequisite: This option is only available if access to the Active Directory has not been blocked in the VLC settings and access to Active Directory groups is allowed in your IT infrastructure. Imported Active Directory groups are not automatically updated.

  1. Click the import split button .
  2. Select Import Usernames From Active Directory Group....
    The dialog Import Usernames From Active Directory Group containing all available user groups is opened.
  3. Activate the desired groups and click [OK].
    The user groups are loaded. The Username Assignments dialog opens.
  4. Select which licenses shall already be assigned.
    Assignments can also be made later in the Manage User Assignments dialog.
  5. Click [OK] to close the dialog Username Assignments.
  6. In the Manage User Assignments dialog that is still open, click [Apply] at the very bottom right to save the changes.
    This also allows you to interrupt editing at any time.
  7. Transfer the user list to the customer license server.
  1. Click [Transfer to Server] to transfer all assignments at once.
  2. Click the arrow in the [Transfer to Server] split button to transfer a specific license.
  1. Click [OK] to close the dialog Manage User Assignments.

Procedure

Export User Names

User names can be exported to *.csv and *.json files. The following options are available.

Export All Usernames

  1. Click the export button in the graphical user interface.
    All usernames in the list are written to a file.
    Each username is in the file exactly once, regardless of whether the user is assigned to some licenses or not.
  2. Select the location and name of the CSV file.
  3. Click [Save].

License Specific Export

  1. Open the context menu by right clicking on the title of the column of a license.
    This export also considers the assignments and their number. Only user that are assigned to the selected license are exported. If a user has e.g. 2 reservations for a license, the csv file will also contain the user 2 times.

  2. Select Export Usernames to CSV File....

  3. Select the location and name of the CSV file.

  4. Click [Save].

Export Command Line File

If you want to do the [Transfer to Server] procedure via CLI, you can use a command line file as input. You can export the command line file via the GUI as follows.

  1. Open the context menu by right clicking on the title of the column of a license.

  2. Select Export Command Line File....

  3. Select the location and name of the JSON file.

  4. Click [Save].

Procedure

Edit all assignments for a license

  1. Open the table context menu by right clicking on the title row.
  2. Perform the following actions:

  • Assign to Everyone: For all configured users, an assignment is added for this license.

  • Clear Assignments: For all configured users, the assignment is removed for this license.

  • Copy Assignments: All assignments for this license are copied.

  • Paste Assignments: Previously copied assignments are pasted for this license.

  1. Click [Apply] at the very bottom right to save the changes.
    This also allows you to interrupt editing at any time.
  2. Transfer the user list to the customer license server.
  1. Click [Transfer to Server] to transfer all assignments at once.
  2. Click the arrow in the [Transfer to Server] split button to transfer a specific license.
  1. Click [OK].

Procedure

Edit Assignments of Specific License

  1. Open the cell context menu by right clicking on the selected cell(s).
    Hint: You can select multiple cells by clicking on a cell, holding down [Shift] and clicking on another cell. The cells in the square formed in this way will be selected.
  2. Perform the following actions:

  • Delete Selected Users: All users that are currently selected (i.e. at least one cell of this user row is selected) are removed from the user list. The assignments will be removed accordingly as well.

  • Assign: Activates the assignment for the selected licenses and the corresponding users.

  • Remove Assignment: Deletes the assignments for the selected licenses for the corresponding users.

  • Allow Multiple License Reservations: If a particular user is allowed to use a license more than once at the same time, this option can be selected to set the number of parallel uses. The simple checkbox is changed to a spin control, which can be used to set the maximum number of licenses to be used simultaneously.

  • Allow Single License Reservation: This option resets any multiple use. The corresponding user will only be able to use the selected license on one computer at any time.

  1. Click [Apply] at the very bottom right to save the changes.

  2. Transfer the user list to the customer license server.
  1. Click [Transfer to Server] to transfer all assignments at once.
  2. Click the arrow in the [Transfer to Server] split button to transfer a specific license.
