Offline Migration

 

To migrate one or more licenses on a license carrier (e.g., a keyman or Vector network interface) with a computer without internet connection, follow all procedures 1-4 below.

Prerequisites

Introduction

  • The Vector License Client must be installed on the offline computer.
  • Make sure you have access to a second computer (not the license carrier) with internet connection.
  • One of the following prerequisites must be fulfilled for the procedures on the online computer:
  • The Vector License Client is installed on the online computer in the same version as on the offline computer.
    This procedure is explained in the following instructions.
  • Alternatively, the Vector Offline Licensing app can be opened in a browser window of the online computer.
    Use the Vector Offline Licensing app instead of the Vector License Client for the online procedures described below for uploading and downloading files. Refer to the corresponding help for information on how to execute the steps with the Vector Offline Licensing app.
  • The data exchange between the online and the offline computer must be possible, e.g., via a storage medium.
  • If you want to perform the action on a keyman or Vector network interface consider connecting device to some other computer with internet connection. You can perform license actions much easier there. After that you can connect the device to the offline computer again and use it.

Notice!

Complete each offline operation by completing all the steps required to do so one after the other before starting a new offline operation. The license carrier cannot process new tasks if tasks have not yet been completed.

Example: You want to activate licenses from two different activation keys (I and II) at the same time. Complete the activation for activation key I (all the steps 1-4) and only after successful completion start the activation process for activation key II (all the steps 1-4).

Notice!

  • Do not disconnect your device during this process!
  • This process can't be undone and the license bits are deleted from the device.
  • Make sure that only the license bit carrier is connected and that all other Vector applications are closed.

  1. Create context file.
    On the offline computer, create a context file (*.vlc) by using the Vector License Client. Refer to the respective help.
  2. Upload context file.
    On the online computer, upload the context file (*.vlc) and thus create the update file (*.vlu) by using either the Vector License Client or the Vector Offline Licensing app.
  3. Install update file.
    On the offline computer, install the update file (*.vlu) and thus create the receipt file (*.vlr) by using the Vector License Client. Refer to the respective help.
  4. Upload receipt file.
    On the online computer, upload the receipt file (*.vlr) by using the Vector License Client or the Vector Offline Licensing app.

Detailed Instruction

Procedure

Step 1: Create VLC-File on the Offline Computer

  1. Open the Vector License Client.
  2. Click ribbon group Licensing|[Migrate].
    The dialog Migrate Licenses: Offline appears with the opened tab Prepare.
  3. Under Step 1, enter the following:
  1. Type your Activation Key into the upper entry field.
  2. Select the License Bit Carrier.
    Note: Connect the license bit carrier to the computer if it is a keyman or a Vector network interface. The Vector License Client automatically checks and displays all supported and currently available license bit carriers in the selection field. If your license bit carrier is missing, make sure your license bit carrier is well connected (refer to Troubleshooting).
  1. Click [Create Context File...].
    A dialog is opened. Enter a file name and select a file path and click Save.
    A Vector Context File *.vlc is created and saved and a success message appears.

    Customization

    • You may set a default location under ribbon Settings|General|[...] to save any context file.
      Note: In this case, the default name will be set automatically.
    • If you repeat offline procedures, you may overwrite any previous *.vlc file since it is used only once. However, make sure to complete the whole procedure before you start the next offline procedure.
  2. Copy the now created *.vlc file to the online computer, e.g., by means of a storage medium.

Procedure

Step 2: Upload VLC-File on the Online Computer and Create VLU-File

  1. Open the Vector License Client.
  2. Click [Continue Offline Process] in the ribbon.
    The Continue Offline Process dialog appears.
  3. Enter the file path to the previously created *.vlc file via [...].
    The dialog Migrate License appears.
  1. In the very first column of the table, activate the check boxes of the product(s) you wish to migrate.
  2. Click [Select...].
    The dialog Migrate License appears and shows all selected licenses available for migration.
  1. In the Continue Offline Process dialog, click [OK].
    The Save Update File dialog appears.
  2. Enter the file path for the *.vlu file to be created via [...].
    Note: Once the *.vlc file was uploaded successfully, the server will respond with an update file *.vlu. This file is automatically saved with the appendix _Update.
  3. Click [Save].
    A note appears with a link to the file location.
  4. Copy the now created *.vlu file to the offline computer, e.g., by means of a storage medium.

Procedure

Step 3: Install VLU-File on the Offline Computer and Create VLR-File

  1. Open the Vector License Client.
  2. Open the dialog Migrate Licenses: Offline.
    The tab Prepare is opened.
  1. Under Step 2, click [Open Update File].
    The Open dialog appears.
  2. Select the previously saved *.vlu file and click [Open].
    The Apply tab is opened automatically.
    If necessary, check the operations to be done.
  3. Click [Apply].
    The Confirm License Operation dialog is opened.
  4. Click [Save Confirmation...].
    The Save dialog is opened.
  5. Enter the file path and name of the *.vlr file to be created.
    If no file path and name is entered, the file is automatically saved parallel to the *.vlu file with the appendix _Receipt.
  6. Click [Save].
    A success message is displayed.
  7. Click [OK].
  8. Copy the now created *.vlr file to the online computer, e.g., by means of a storage medium.

Procedure

Step 4: Upload VLR-File on the Online Computer

  1. Open the Vector License Client.
  2. Click [Continue Offline Process] in the ribbon.
    The Continue Offline Process dialog appears.
  3. Enter the file path to the previously created *.vlr file via [...].
  4. Click [OK].
    A success message appears.
    The server will not respond with a file this time.
    The procedure is completed.
The licenses are migrated. You may continue with the activation now.
 

Note: Uploading the receipt file (*.vlr) is absolutely necessary to complete the offline procedure. If the process is not properly completed, it may be difficult to disable the licenses later.
